Eleni Chatzi, Professor of Structural Mechanics and Monitoring, uses sensors to feel the pulse of buildings in order to monitor their state of health - a concept that engineers use in analogy to the monitoring of health in life sciences.

Each year, the Robert L’Hermite Medal is awarded by RILEM to a researcher of less than 40 years, who has made an exceptional scientific contribution to the field of construction materials and structures.

As of January 1, 2017, Prof. Dr. Ueli Angst became an SNSF assistant professor at the Institute for Building Materials (IfB). His research and teaching interests lie in the field of “Durability of Engineering Materials”. The D-BAUG wishes Ueli Angst a good start and much success!

Zurich, 25 November 2016 – Yesterday, the project team behind the novel building technology «Mesh Mould» received the Swiss Technology Award in the category «Inventors» at the 11th Swiss Innovation Forum in Basel. The award ceremony was attended by around 1000 opinion leaders from Swiss economy, politics and society. «Mesh Mould», which was developed by researchers of ETH Zurich, allows to build load-­bearing concrete elements of any shape without formwork.

Best PhD award for the thesis "Controlling cement hydration through the molecular structure of comb-copolymer superplasticizers", by the Construction Chemical Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), received at the 2nd International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials (ICCCM), Munich, Germany, October 2016.

The research project Mesh Mould successfully qualified for the final of this year’s Swiss Technology Award.

Scientists of ETH Zurich tested the influence of gravity on aquatic microorganisms in a zero-g research flight.

Professor Konrad Schindler (*1974), so far Associate Professor at the ETH Zurich, has been appointed as Full Professor of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

Dr Daniel Farinotti (*1982), so far a senior scientific staff member at WSL in Birmensdorf, has been appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Glaciology.

Professor Jing Wang (*1979), so far Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, has been appointed as Associate Professor of Air Quality and Particle Technology.

Dr. Delphine Marchon has won the Second Best Oral Presentation Award at the Junior Euromat Conference 2016 in July.

Elizaveta Pustovgar has won an award for the best video promoting her research presentation at the American Ceramic Society meeting in July.
