Performance Assessments

Credits are awarded for courses that have been passed successfully together with performance assessments (lectures with practical work, laboratory work, seminars, etc.).

Important information on performance assessments and further details on examination forms are published on the student portal.

Details on performance assessment for each course are listed in the course catalogue.

First-year Examinations

The course content from the first year of study is examined in the first-year examination. This annual exam is divided into two blocks. The first-year examination, consisting of first-year examination block A and first-year examination block B, must be taken within four semesters of the start of the course. The examinations belonging to a single first-year examination block must be taken in the same examination session.

After the first semester, the courses of the 1st semester can be completed in block A. After the second semester, this is possible for the courses of the 2nd semester in block B. Both blocks can also be taken together after the second semester.
Basic examination block A and basic examination block B can be taken independently of each other in different or in the same examination session and in any order, i. H. Block A can also be taken as block B in a later examination session.

The first-year examination is passed if the average of the weighted grades in both Block A and Block B is at least 4.0, i. H. if both Block A and Block B are passed.
A failed Block A or Block B can only be repeated once. The repetition includes all examinations of a failed first-year examination block

The courses Analysis I + II and Chemistry I + II are annual courses (lectures/exercises in autumn and spring), each of these will be completed with one examination.

Students are awarded 61 credit points for passing the first-year examination, including the other obligatory individual subjects of the first year.

Block Examinations

Most compulsory courses of the 3rd to 6th semester are combined in examination blocks and tested as such together within one examination session.

An examination block (EB) is passed if the weighted average grade of the credits for the individual courses is at least 4.0. The grade weight of a course can be found in the overview of the examination blocks. For each examination block passed, the total credits for the courses included in the block is awarded.

Individual Compulsory Subjects

In addition to the compulsory courses, which are completed in the first-year examination or in examination blocks, each semester also contains one or more courses that must be taken as individual performances.

Failed examinations of individual subjects can be repeated once. If the individual subject is a compulsory subject, failing twice leads to exclusion from the course.

In the event of repeated failure of examinations from the area of subject-specific electives, electives from the ETH / University of Zurich and GESS Science in Context, another subject from the same area must be chosen in order to achieve the required credit points.

A performance assessment that has been passed cannot be repeated.

A successful bachelor's degree in environmental engineering is completed with a total of at least 180 credit points.
